Can You Use Regular Toilet Paper in an RV?

Yes, ordinary toilet paper can be used in recreational vehicles.

However, using septic-safe paper is a good idea.

If you are going to use regular TP, make sure you implement some of the following precautions.

  • Dispose of it in a special wastebasket instead of flushing it.
  • Break it up before using it, so it dissolves more easily.
  • Use less, don’t wad it up.
  • Use lots of water when flushing.
  • Make sure you’re using holding tank chemicals to help break waste down.

The RV Toilet Paper Test

You can easily test ANY toilet paper to find out if it’s suitable to use in an RV. So if you have a favorite brand you use it home, you might not have to make a switch if it passes this test.

  • Fill a glass jar about halfway with water.
  • Put two squares/sheets of toilet paper inside the jar.
  • Put the lid on the jar and tighten it.
  • Shake the jar for 5-10 seconds.
  • Set the glass down, and within a few seconds to a minute, see if the toilet paper starts to dissolve.

If you still see large pieces of toilet paper, do not use this brand of paper in your RV.  Note that if you shake vigorously more than 2 times, any paper will more than likely start dissolving.

RV Toilet Paper Vs Septic Safe

RV toilet paper can disintegrate or dissolve quickly, making it safe for septic systems as well. You don’t have to worry about it clogging the sewer or sitting at the bottom of the septic tank. RV owners can use the septic safe toilet paper to prevent clogs in their sewer lines and septic systems. This tissue paper is also recommended for portable toilets, mobile homes, cabins, and campsites because it does not settle at the bottom of the holding tank.

Additionally, the toilet paper recommended for septic systems disintegrates much faster than those used in homes. To avoid septic and sewer clogs, you should invest in safe RV tissue paper.

RV Toilet Paper Vs Regular

A different type of tissue paper is needed for RV toilets. RV specific TP is tried and tested to dissolve quickly, which is why it’s ideal for recreational vehicle use. RV owners can use RV tissue paper without worrying about it clogging the sewer or sitting at the bottom of the tank.

Compared to regular tissue paper, RV toilet paper can also be softer and more comfortable on the skin thanks to the soft material used. Many of the best RV toilet papers are non-scented, making them safe for people with sensitive skin, babies, and even babies with sensitive skin.
